Turkey for Large Groups: Planning 25 to 100+ Guests

Plan turkey quantity, multiple birds, oven capacity, carving, holding, service style, and contingency margin for large gatherings.

For 25 or more guests, plan the event as a production schedule rather than one oversized turkey. Multiple 12–16 lb birds are easier to thaw, cook, verify, carve, and serve than a single extreme-size bird.

Starting Quantity

Use 1–1.25 lb of raw whole turkey per adult, then adjust for children, side dishes, service style, and leftovers. The Turkey Catering Calculator converts guest count into total weight, bird count, per-bird size, and oven logistics.

Example Bird Counts

GuestsPractical starting plan
25Two 14–16 lb birds
50Four 14–16 lb birds
75Six 14–16 lb birds
100Eight 14–16 lb birds

These are planning examples, not universal purchasing rules. Plated service controls portions more tightly than a buffet.

Oven and Timing Plan

Confirm how many birds fit with adequate airflow. Stagger cooking when necessary and assign each bird its own thermometer checks and finish record. Do not assume equal-weight birds finish simultaneously.

Carving and Holding

Create a dedicated carving station. For service, hold carved meat according to safe time and temperature practices and add stock to reduce drying. Avoid carving every bird too early merely for convenience.

Contingency Margin

Plan backup time, extra thermometer batteries, carving tools, shallow storage containers, and a modest quantity buffer. For very large events, document who owns thawing, cooking, temperature verification, carving, replenishment, and leftover storage.

Cost Control

Compare fresh and frozen pricing, but include brine, oil, fuel, storage, and backup-bird costs. The cheapest price per pound is not always the lowest operational cost when oven capacity or thawing space is limited.
