Calculator Methodology
Our calculators convert guest counts, turkey cuts, serving styles, and preparation choices into practical planning estimates. We keep the major assumptions visible so results can be checked and adjusted.
Portion assumptions
A traditional whole-bird plan starts near 1.25 lb per adult. A light spread may require more turkey per plate, while a side-heavy spread may require less. Children are estimated as a fraction of an adult portion, and leftovers add a separate buffer.
Cooking estimates
Standard roasting estimates use 15 minutes per pound unstuffed and 18.5 minutes per pound stuffed. Spatchcock and deep-fry estimates use their own planning rates. These figures schedule the meal; doneness must be verified with a thermometer.
Thawing estimates
Refrigerator thawing uses approximately 24 hours per 4.5 lb. Cold-water thawing uses approximately 30 minutes per pound and requires water changes every 30 minutes.
Rounding and limitations
Retail recommendations round into practical size bands. Actual yield and timing vary with bird shape, starting temperature, oven accuracy, stuffing, cut, packaging, and preparation. Results are not food-safety guarantees.
